Kannawa is one of Beppu‘s eight original onsen spots. There you can experience what an onsen town was like in the old days of Beppu. Here lies a traditional inn from the Meiji era that has been passed down from generation to generation. Recently life has been breathed back into the inn and now you can enjoy both the modern and traditional at Sally Garden Yanagiya. When you pass through the beautiful entrance way that was designed by Michiaki Mochizuki, you will feel like you are taking a step into another world and taking a break from everyday life. Soak in the hot onsen water that is continuously flowing from the ground and never reused. Enjoy lip-smacking steamed cooked food or take a nap while wearing a comfortable cotton robe. When you want to change the mood visit the nearby gallery and view the beautiful antiques and art that are on display. At the cafe have a cup of tea and try the delicious “Sally Garden” chiffon cake you won’t be disappointed. Come to Yanagiya to relax your mind and body and have the ultimate getaway.
Yanagiya boasts its own private hot spring source. The onsen water has a slight salty taste and it has a silky feel as well. The onsen water warms the body to core and keeps it warm after leaving the onsen. A natural occurning skin moitsurizer known as metasilicic acid is also found in the water that will give your skin a nice sheen after bathing.
Yanagiya keeps the traditional onsen inn style while being modern at the same time. Although it is an old traditional house, it has the same luxouries and comforts of a hotel. If you decide to take our breakfast plan, we offer delicious steam cooked food. People come to Yanagiya to relax and since it is an old building, sound travels easily throughout the building so please keep that in mind when enjoying your stay here. There is no elevator but only stairs to go up and down the floors and we are sorry for the inconvenience. There is no smoking allowed anywhere inside Yanagiya. There is a designated place outside to smoke for customers that smoke.
The way to steam food has been done since the Edo period and lives on today. You can steam food in the pot that is located in the garden that is surrounded by the inn. When you steam vegetables the sweetness of them is intensified because of the mineral rich steam that is used to cook the food. Because steaming is such a simple cooking method, meat, seafood and shellfish are delicious as they are and don`t require much seasoning. The ingredients to cook in the steam pot can be purchased at a nearby supermarket. The steam cooked food can only be eaten in the space available and can`t be taken back to the room. The steam pot is shared so consider other guests when using it and it is opened until 9:00 P.M..
There is a delicious Italian restaurant located next to Yangiya as well if you don`t feel like cooking. At the restaurant you can enjoy a variety of steamed seafood and local food from Oita. Dinner service is availble from 6:00 P.M. until 10:00 P.M.(last order is at 8:00P.M.) and you must make a reservation (Please make it a day before). Dinner courses range from 7560 yen to 10800 yen.
